Progress on estimating evolution in biology and linguistics

Colloquium
Speaker: Tandy Warnow
Location: 1127/1131 Kemper Hall
When: Thu Mar 13, 2008 15:10
Host: Dan Gusfield
The inference of evolutionary histories in both biology and linguistics presents fascinating and difficult computational and mathematical challenges. I will describe the work my group is doing to develop efficient and highly accurate methods for phylogeny estimation, addressing issues such as multiple sequence alignment, whole genome phylogeny reconstruction, fast heuristics for NP-hard optimization problems, polynomial time methods with polynomial sequence length requirements, detection and reconstruction of reticulate evolution, and supertree problems.
